He embarked on his explorations in 1836 and published his first publication, Les Monuments égyptiens, in 1841. He returned to Egypt in the late 1850s to expand his work into the collection LHistoire de l'art égyptien, which remains the largest, single-handed illustrated record of Egyptian art in existence. A passionate scholar of ancient Egyptian and Oriental cultures, Achille-Constant-Théodore-Émile Prisse dAvennes (1807–1879) is widely regarded as one of the most influential Egyptologists, even before the field was officially recognized. Prisse's exploration journey began in 1836, during which he meticulously documented sites throughout the Nile Valley, often using the pseudonym Edris Effendi. His initial publication, Les Monuments égyptiens, a modest collection of 51 plates, received widespread acclaim in both popular and intellectual circles. Encouraged by his success, Prisse returned to Egypt in the late 1850s to further expand his work into the comprehensive collection LHistoire de l'art égyptien. This two-volume set, along with his first volume, constitutes a thorough survey of Egyptian art. Prisse's albums encompass various artistic disciplines, including architecture, drawing, sculpture, painting, and industrial or minor arts. Each section, plan, architectural detail, and surface decoration is meticulously documented with utmost sensitivity and accuracy. Even when compared to the remarkable achievements of the great state-sponsored expeditions to Egypt during this period, Prisse's compendium remains the largest, single-handed illustrated record of Egyptian art in existence. Immerse yourself in a visual and archaeological feast of symmetry and complexity as you explore the complete collection of Prisse's unparalleled illustrations in this Bibliotheca Universalis edition. Originally available only in an XL-sized format, this edition captures the mystery and opulence of Prisse's groundbreaking collection in an affordable and compact format, making it accessible to a wider audience.
