Prophets, a poem of rhythmic and metaphoric inventiveness, takes us on a journey to Jamaica in the late 1980s and 1990s. It explores the social and cultural resonances of the Jamaican society, juxtaposing an ebullient cynicism with a heartfelt desire for faith. In this vibrant landscape, Clarice and Thalbot, two preachers with contrasting visions, navigate the competing influences of 24-hour television, dancehall, slackness, and ganja on the minds of the Jamaican people. Clarice, using her gifts, has risen from the urban Jamaican ghetto, basking in the adulation of her followers who seek her for personal salvation. Thalbot, on the other hand, has fallen from comfort and security onto the streets, a deranged voice in the wilderness. While Clarice adores her blue-eyed Jesus, Thalbot proudly brandishes his blackness in the face of every passer-by. However, their paths intertwine when Clarice sins on a beach, unaware that Thalbot is witness to her fall. Driven by a sense of duty, he sets out on a journey reminiscent of Jonah, determined to denounce the prophetess and warn the Ninevite city of its impending doom. This epic struggle unfolds, painting a vivid portrait of the complexities and contradictions of Jamaican society.
