  • More about Psychophysiological Measurement of Covert Behavior: A Guide for the Laboratory

The study of covert behavior in psychology has been delayed due to the lack of suitable psychophysiological technology. This book, published in 1979, was written to help laboratory researchers develop a mature science of covert behavior. It was technologically capable of sensing, amplifying, recording, and quantifying small-scale behavior with at least the effectiveness with which we have studied large-scale responses.

Psychology had achieved significant advancements by the 1970s, primarily focusing on studying overt behavior. However, its progress in understanding covert behavior had been hindered due to the lack of appropriate psychophysiological technology. This book, originally published in 1979, was written with the intention of assisting laboratory researchers in their quest to establish a mature science of covert behavior. Early attempts to record small-scale behavior using flattened wine glasses placed on the tongue were courageous, but they understandably faced limitations until the advent of highly sensitive electronic equipment. In 1979, technological advancements had reached a point where we could sense, amplify, record, and quantify small-scale behavior with remarkable effectiveness, comparable to our studies of large-scale responses. The authors of this book hoped that it would serve as a valuable resource for future psychophysiologists and professional researchers engaged in the four phases of the laboratory system. More broadly, it was intended to contribute to our understanding of behavior. While it may be read in its historical context, its insights and contributions remain relevant today.
