The railway lines of North and Mid Wales boast some of the most breathtaking coastal and mountain scenery in all of Great Britain. In this article, we take a nostalgic journey back to the British Railways era, from 1980 to 2000, as captured through the lenses of my cameras during numerous visits to the area. To provide a complete picture, we have included a few photographs from earlier years as well. During this period, the railway atmosphere was still rich with mechanical signalling and many old station buildings, which added to the charm of the journey.

Featured here are the North Wales Coast line and its branches, including the former Cambrian line from Welshpool to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, as well as the Welsh section of the Shrewsbury to Chester line. While the focus is primarily on the main lines, we also take a look at the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, which was closed by British Railways in 1956 but reopened as a heritage railway in 1986. Additionally, we explore the Llangollen Railway, which operates on a section of the former Ruabon to Barmouth line, and the Vale of Rheidol Railway, which was sold by British Rail into private ownership in 1989.

To add to the nostalgia, we have included a few photographs of the steam specials that regularly ran on the main lines during this era. These trains were a sight to behold, with their majestic steam engines and ornate carriages, and they provided a glimpse into the past of rail travel.

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this journey through the scenic railway lines of North and Mid Wales, a testament to the beauty and charm of Great Britain's railway heritage.
