Over the course of more than fifty years, the Eastern Counties railways have undergone significant transformations. The primary mode of transportation on the secondary lines was first-generation diesel multiple units, with locomotive-hauled expresses being utilized on the InterCity routes and the Harwich boat trains. Presently, modern electric trains swiftly traverse the northward route to Norwich and Kings Lynn, while comfortable diesel units cater to the cross-country routes. On other lines, new electric or bi-mode sets have recently entered service. The traditional semaphore signaling system has largely been replaced by centralized color light systems.
