In this captivating illustrated picture book by Lara Hawthorne, a mysterious creature ventures beyond the confines of a secluded volcano crater, embarking on a thrilling exploration of the outer world. However, what he encounters is not quite what he had anticipated. Will this extraordinary journey teach him that there truly is no place like home?
Ratty, an enormous wooly vegetarian rat, resides deep within the crater of an ancient volcano nestled within the lush rainforest. One fine day, he catches sight of a particularly delectable-looking fruit perched high up in the treetops, and his curiosity gets the better of him. From his elevated vantage point, Ratty beholds a breathtaking panorama—the world beyond his mountain crater. In his imagination, he envisions the fruit as being much sweeter, the bird songs more melodious, and the other animals far more intriguing and sophisticated. Thus, he sets off on a quest to seek out better things.
However, his adventure takes an unexpected turn when a crocodile, who appears to be somewhat too friendly, invites him to attend a dinner party. At that moment, Ratty realizes that perhaps there is no place like home after all.
This enchanting picture book, inspired by the recent scientific discoveries of Mount Bosavi, where over 40 new species of animals and plants were identified, seamlessly blends storytelling and fact. It celebrates the remarkable diversity of life and encourages us to be grateful for what we have.
For fans of the BBC's The Lost Land of the Volcano, this book offers insights from entomologist Dr. George McGavin, who was part of the original expedition team.
