  • More about Recognising Adoptee Relationships

This autoethnographic narrative explores the temporal, situated nature of interactions between the author as an adoptee with her adult adopted children, as well as those between herself and her birth father and mother, from a triadic perspective. The epiphanic adoptive family narratives aim to deepen and challenge understanding of kinship affinities and personal growth, and are written in a critical, evocative style that contributes to insights around epistemic in/justice in adoptive kinship. The book will be of interest to educators and scholars of adoption, as well as adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents, in informing an understanding of kin relationships and how these may be subject to change over time.

This autoethnographic narrative delves into the temporal and situated nature of interactions between the author, an adoptee, and her adult adopted children, as well as those between herself and her birth father and mother. Through a triadic perspective, the narratives aim to enhance and challenge our understanding of how kinship affinities are experienced. The critical and evocative style employed in these autoethnographic narratives is highly valuable for two reasons. Firstly, the processes of reflexive self-introspection, self-observation, and engaging in dialogue with relational others have established a critical connection between recognizing and responding to kinship affinities and personal growth. Secondly, situated at the intersection of the self and other, these narratives contribute to deepening insights into epistemic in/justice in adoptive kinship.

This book will appeal to educators and scholars of adoption, providing an insider's perspective on unique family relationships and the author's approach to critical, evocative autoethnography. Adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents alike will find the narratives in Part II particularly insightful in gaining a deeper understanding of kin relationships and how these may evolve over time.
