Retirement may seem dull for some, but not for Reubens grandfather! With ample free time at his disposal, this retired professor of neuroscience embarks on an exciting project: creating a machine that has the incredible ability to alter people's behavior. Determined to convince Reuben of the machine's potential, Gramps experiments on a pompous neighbor. Despite a few glitches, the machine appears to work remarkably well. Gramps treats Reuben, his best friend Simon, and the accident-prone gardener Bert, known as Blundergutts, to a day out in London, where they further explore the machine's capabilities.

During their visit to Victoria Station, they encounter Ted, an unpopular man from their village, who is about to perform a concert on the cymbals for the first time. Gramps seizes the unexpected opportunity to interfere with Ted's performance, causing him to clash the cymbals at an inappropriate moment, disrupting the concert and turning proud Ted into an absolute failure.

Reuben and Simon, who are constantly bullied by their headteacher, Mr. Pride, find solace in Gramps' spare machine. During a government inspection at their school, Reuben borrows the machine and creates utter chaos, resulting in the immediate suspension of Mr. Pride.

As Reuben and his companions continue to test the limits of the mind machine, they discover the incredible power it possesses. The machine has the potential to transform lives and rewrite the course of history. However, they also realize that there may be consequences to their actions, and they must weigh the risks and rewards of using such a powerful tool.

In conclusion, retirement may be boring for some, but for Reubens grandfather, it is a time of immense creativity and discovery. With his amazing mind machine, Gramps sets out to change the world, one behavior at a time. Through their adventures, Reuben and his friends learn the true meaning of responsibility and the impact of their actions. The mind machine may be incredible, but it is not without its dangers, and Reuben and his companions must navigate the complexities of its power carefully.
