Richard Owen, a brilliant, hard-working, immensely productive, and influential naturalist, played a significant role in shaping the Natural History Museum in London. Despite his reputation for being difficult and arrogant, he was a great promoter of science. However, he was accused of plagiarism and bullying, and Charles Darwin famously claimed to hate him. While Owen strongly opposed Darwin and Thomas Huxley's theories of evolution through natural selection, there is evidence that some of his ideas were not so distant from theirs. This biography provides an account of Owen's life and work, exploring possible psychological and social reasons for his more controversial characteristics and his sometimes strained relations with various scientific contemporaries.
