American artist John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) found Spain, particularly the picturesque island of Majorca, to be a source of rejuvenation and inspiration. Sargent and Spain showcases a vast collection of the artist's dazzling watercolors, oil paintings, and drawings, encompassing landscapes, seascapes, architectural studies, scenes of everyday life, and sympathetic portraits of the Roma and other local people he encountered. Immersing himself in the country's rich culture, Sargent studied Spanish masters both old and new, with a particular focus on works by Diego Velázquez in the Prado. He meticulously rendered the distinctive architecture of the Alhambra and other palaces and churches, capturing the vibrant energy of ports and villages. Sargent's fascination with Spanish dance and music led him to create dynamic views of flamenco and the renowned dancer La Carmencita. Accompanied by a map and an illustrated chronology, this handsome book presents, for the first time, Sargent's captivation with Spain and the remarkable works of art that have become synonymous with it. Published in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, Sargent and Spain is scheduled to be exhibited at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, from October 2, 2022, to January 2, 2023. It will then travel to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Legion of Honor, from February 11 to May 14, 2023.
