This captivating book delves into the rich tapestry of Scottish women's writing in English, spanning from its humble beginnings in the late eighteenth century to its vibrant flourishing in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Initially faced with formidable obstacles, including the stern opposition of the Presbyterian Church and the chauvinistic mindset of the male hierarchy that deprived them of an adequate education, an astounding number of women managed to carve out spaces amidst their domestic responsibilities to pursue their passion for writing and often achieve publication – be it in the form of novels, poetry, diaries, journalism, letters, essays, or reportage.

Charlotte Waldie and Christina Keith, two brave souls, ventured to Waterloo and Flanders in the immediate aftermath of the battles. Another intrepid writer, Emily Graves, penned a captivating memoir detailing her travels in Transylvania, which served as the inspiration for Bram Stoker's iconic novel, Dracula. Among the many remarkable figures who left their mark on Scottish women's writing are literary multi-talents such as Christian Isabel Johnstone, renowned playwright Joanna Baillie, working-class poets Marion Bernstein and Janet Hamilton, novelist Susan Ferrier, memoirist Anne Grant of Laggan, and writer and scientist Mary Somerville, whose captivating image graces the cover of this book. It is worth noting that Somerville College, Oxford, bears her name, paying tribute to her remarkable contributions to the world of academia and science.

The journey of Scottish women's writing in English is a testament to their resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit, despite facing numerous challenges and barriers throughout history. Their words have resonated with readers for generations, shedding light on the lives and experiences of women in Scotland and beyond. This book serves as a valuable resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in exploring the rich literary heritage of Scotland and the remarkable contributions of its women writers.
