Detective Ford has a daunting task ahead of him: capturing a cold-blooded killer. However, he must also confront his own dark secrets. Just a month after his promotion to Inspector, DI Ford is assigned to investigate the murder of a young nurse and her son in a small flat in Salisbury. The case presents few clues and no apparent motive, but Ford possesses a keen intuition that a serial killer is at work. He knows all too well from his own harrowing experience how killers meticulously cover their tracks.

Six years have passed since Ford's wife tragically lost her life in a climbing accident—an accident that he inadvertently caused. He is relentlessly determined to keep the truth hidden, especially from his son, Sam. However, his new partner, Dr. Hannah Fellowes, is a crime scene investigator with a razor-sharp analytical mind. As they work together to track down the killer, Ford's overwhelming guilt is compounded by the fear of being exposed.

When his instincts lead him toward a high-profile suspect, his superiors issue warnings, further fueling his determination to connect the dots between impulse and fact. But can Ford maintain his composure and hold everything together—the case, his life—long enough to apprehend the killer? The stakes have never been higher, and Ford must navigate through a web of lies and deceit to bring the perpetrator to justice.
