Bath's top detective, Peter Diamond, is a firm believer in the power of coincidence and doesn't give much credence to jinxes. However, when he is approached to investigate a popular TV show that has been plagued by a series of unfortunate incidents, Diamond remains unmoved. He has a personal distaste for the show, which glorifies criminals and mocks the police, and the incidents occurred over a span of six years. Diamond believes that the press is capitalizing on these events and creating a sensation out of nothing. Consequently, he assigns the junior member of his squad, Paul Gilbert, to handle the case.

However, things take a turn when Paul accompanies the TV unit on location and witnesses another near-death incident. This forces Diamond to take a more active interest in the case, despite his initial reluctance. To make matters worse, the press becomes aware of Diamond's involvement, and he is subjected to intense pressure from all quarters. But his troubles are just beginning. The case becomes increasingly baffling as he encounters devastating traps and unexpected surprises, making it one of the most challenging cases of his entire career.
