Simone Pheulpin, a French artist, believes that cloth should be recognized as a material as noble as wood, stone, or metal. Her material of choice is bands of raw cotton fabric, manufactured in the Vosges region of France. Pheulpin's approach to sculpture is unique and unconventional. She transforms this simple cloth through a process of piling and folding it into dense, regular folds held together by invisible metal pins. This technique creates a space entirely her own, allowing her to invent a grammar of sorts and give the fold a visual and chromatic function. The result is a series of strange and captivating works that resemble colonies of coral or lichen, or slabs of striated limestone with fault lines running through them.
