  • More about Singapore's Multiculturalism: Evolving Diversity

Singapore has developed a unique approach to managing diversity since independence in 1965, due to its distinct ethnic makeup, ambitions as a globally oriented city-state, and small physical size. This approach has presented society with challenges and opportunities, and the author team projected the impact of current domestic and international social trends into the future to anticipate what Singapore society might look like by 2040. Singapore is a case study of a global city facing the challenges of developed-world modernity in acute ways.

Since attaining independence in 1965, Singapore has developed a distinctive approach to managing the diverse range of racial, religious, cultural, linguistic, national, and age-related characteristics among its citizens. This approach is a result of a multitude of factors, including its distinct ethnic composition compared to its neighboring countries, its aspirations as a globally oriented city-state, and its relatively small physical size. Each of these factors, along with many others, has presented Singapore society with a range of challenges and opportunities, which are likely to persist for the foreseeable future.

In the process of writing this book, the author team aimed to project the impact of current domestic and international social trends into the future, to anticipate what Singapore society might look like by the year 2040. To accomplish this, they analyzed the unique path that Singapore has taken since gaining independence, comparing it to other multicultural societies and considering the balance between the need to forge a new national identity after British and Malaysian departure and the importance of ensuring social enfranchisement for Singapore's ethnic minority populations. They also considered how current trends may evolve over the next couple of decades, what new challenges this may present to Singapore society, and what potential responses to these challenges may be.

In this book, Singapore serves as a case study of a global city facing the challenges of developed-world modernity in often acute ways.
