The acclaimed Queen of Crime, P. D. James, was a virtuoso of the short story, skillfully interweaving themes from the Golden Age of crime writing with profound psychological insight to craft captivating and suspenseful narratives. This companion volume presents a collection of six such stories, previously unpublished together, which were originally featured in The Mistletoe Murder and Other Stories. As the six murderous tales unfold, the dark motive of revenge emerges as the central theme in each. Unhappy marriages and childhoods find their retribution, bullying schoolmasters face their comeuppance, and a murder on Christmas Day brings an end to the tyrannical new lord of the manor. Even from the confines of his nursing home, an octogenarian exacts exquisite revenge. The punishments meted out to the guilty are fitting and severe, but they are administered by the unseen forces of natural justice rather than the institutions of law. P. D. James once again demonstrates her mastery of the short-story form, skillfully conjuring motives and scenarios with complete conviction, each culminating in a satisfying twist in the tail.
