Southdown Buses in Preservation

Southdown Motor Services, formed in 1915, operated green-and-cream buses and coaches along the south coast of Sussex and Hampshire. Today, over a hundred former Southdown buses and coaches are preserved, with many restored to a high standard and licensed to carry passengers for hire. Others attend rallies and shows for preservation. Some vehicles are awaiting restoration or have been dismantled to provide parts for sister vehicles.

Southdown Motor Services was founded in 1915 and quickly established itself as a prominent and esteemed operator of green-and-cream buses and coaches along the south coast of Sussex and Hampshire. Today, there are over a hundred former Southdown buses and coaches that have been preserved, making it one of the highest numbers of preserved single-operator vehicles outside of London. Many of these vehicles have been meticulously restored to their original condition, with some even licensed to carry passengers for hire and participate in regular service. Others are displayed at rallies and shows for enthusiasts to enjoy and reminisce about the past. Unfortunately, some vehicles are in storage awaiting restoration or have been dismantled to provide parts for other surviving sister vehicles. Simon Stanford has curated a captivating collection of images that showcase the beautifully restored and preserved Southdown buses and coaches, including a few from other operators such as Brighton Hove & District, which were acquired by Southdown in 1969.
