In 1915, Stanley Spencer joined the Royal Fusiliers as a private, and after being commissioned in 1917, he served with the West Yorkshire Regiment until his demobilization in 1919. He experienced nearly uninterrupted active service from 1915 to the conclusion of the War. He was present at significant battles such as the Battle of the Somme, Montaubon, and Vimy Ridge. He sustained minor injuries on three occasions and was awarded the Military Cross for his significant contribution to a successful trench raid on August 1, 1918.
