  • More about Surface Flute Waves in Plasmas: Eigenwaves, Excitation, and Applications

This book provides a comprehensive theoretical study of electromagnetic eigenwaves propagating perpendicular to the axis of symmetry in cylindrical waveguide-structures filled with magneto-active plasma. It is an updated and expanded edition of "Surface Flute Waves in Plasmas. Theory and Applications" and includes a study of wave energy rotation and electron beam excitation. The waves only propagate along plasma surfaces and decrease with distance from the boundary, with surfaces of constant density resembling fluted Greek columns. The book applies to professionals and students in electrodynamics, plasma physics, and related fields.

This comprehensive theoretical study delves into the propagation of electromagnetic eigenwaves perpendicular to the axis of symmetry within various cylindrical waveguide structures filled with magneto-active plasma. It represents the second, updated, and significantly expanded edition of our previous publication, "Surface Flute Waves in Plasmas. Theory and Applications," which was released in 2014 under the "Springer Series on Atomic, Optical, and Plasma Physics."

To enhance the understanding of the subject matter, the text is complemented by a thorough examination of the wave energy rotation around the axis of the waveguides. Furthermore, the intricacies of exciting these waves through the gyrating motion of an electron beam around the axis are explored in great detail.

It's important to note that "surface waves" refer to waves that exclusively propagate along plasma surfaces and not in uniform infinite plasmas. As one moves away from the plasma boundary into the plasma depth, the wave amplitudes gradually decrease.

"Flute" signifies that the axial wavenumbers, denoted as k z , of these waves in plasma cylinders are assumed to be zero, and they solely propagate in the azimuthal direction. In such cases, the surfaces of constant density resemble fluted Greek columns. However, the presence of a small but finite k z can be accounted for by employing the method of successive approximations, utilizing the theory of surface flute waves as the zeroth approach.

Furthermore, the book encompasses a diverse range of present applications of surface waves and explores potential future applications within the field. Its applicability extends to both professionals engaged in resolving physical and technological challenges associated with confined plasmas and to graduate and post-graduate students specializing in the domains of electrodynamics, plasma physics, and related applications.
