The production of biofuels has a rich history, with global biofuel production levels reaching 1,841 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2019, a significant increase from the 187 thousand barrels per day produced in 2000. This growth has been driven by policies aimed at promoting the use and production of biofuels, as they are perceived to offer energy security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in various sectors. From a technical perspective, almost all fuels derived from fossil resources can be substituted with their bio-based counterparts. However, the cost of bio-based production often exceeds that of petrochemical production, making it challenging for biofuels to compete on a cost basis. Additionally, biofuels must demonstrate equivalent performance to their petrochemical counterparts and have a lower environmental impact to be deemed viable.

The low price of crude oil has historically acted as a barrier to biofuels production, leading producers to focus on the unique attributes of biofuels, such as their complex structure, to justify production costs. However, the growing demand for environmentally friendly products, population growth, and limited supplies of non-renewable resources have created new opportunities for biofuels. The industry is increasingly viewing chemical production from renewable resources as an attractive area for investment.

This book is unique in its approach to introducing new process intensification techniques that will enable the generation of clean, efficient, and economical processes for biofuels in a competitive market. By leveraging these techniques, the book aims to facilitate the widespread adoption of biofuels as a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.
