In 1997, Britain handed over Hong Kong to Communist China, but in 2020, the Chinese politburo took control, curtailing freedom of speech and interfering with profits. Two decades earlier, a plan was hatched to assassinate China's leader and form the Pearl Delta Republic. A known Palestinian terrorist was recruited, but other forces were also at work with different motives.

In 1997, Britain's final major overseas territory, Hong Kong, was returned to Communist China, a move that echoed the country's betrayal of the 1842 Treaty of Nanking. Just as it had disregarded that treaty in 2020, the Year of the Rat, so too did it disregard the Joint Declaration signed by both nations to ensure the stability of the newly established Special Administrative Region. It didn't take long for the Chinese politburo to assert its control beyond the city's downtown streets. Freedom of speech was curtailed, laws were altered, and the man on the Shau Kei Wan tram began to question whether they would have been better off under British colonial rule. The Handover had transformed into a Takeaway.

What the tram passengers were unaware of was that two decades earlier, a plan had been hatched from across the border in Guandong Province. It was audacious yet straightforward: if the pro-Beijing administration in Hong Kong became too controlling and interfered with their profits, Operation Opium would be launched. China's leader would be assassinated, and a new country, the Pearl Delta Republic, would be formed. Hundreds of millions of dollars had been raised and secreted to fund the operation. A known Palestinian terrorist, high on the CIA's wanted list, was recruited to carry out the task.

However, other forces were also at work, driven by different motives but with equally effective planning. This is not just daring in the South China Sea. It involves collaboration at the highest levels in London and Washington. Who exactly knew what?
