- More about The Annotated Works of Henry George: Protection or Free Trade
Henry George's Progress and Poverty (1879) and Protection or Free Trade (1886) are essential works of social reform and economics that address the ravages of privileged monopolies and the woes of industrialization. This six-volume edition of The Annotated Works of Henry George assembles all his major works for the first time with new introductions, critical annotations, extensive bibliographical material, and comprehensive indexing. Volume IV presents the unabridged text of Protection or Free Trade, which argues that free trade, when linked with land value taxation or the systematic collection of economic rent, reduces wealth and income inequality. The introductory essay by Professor William S. Peirce provides the historical, political, and conceptual context for Georges debates with the prominent political economists and trade experts of his time. Trade barriers typically serve the interests of a few and impede the overall economic progress of society.

Henry George (1839–1897) was a prominent social reformer and economist during the late nineteenth century, known for his influential works such as Progress and Poverty (1879) and The Annotated Works of Henry George. His reform agenda, which addressed the negative effects of privileged monopolies and industrialization, resonated with diverse figures such as Leo Tolstoy, John Dewey, Sun Yat-Sen, Winston Churchill, and Albert Einstein. This six-volume edition of The Annotated Works of Henry George includes all of his major works, with new introductions, critical annotations, extensive bibliographical material, and comprehensive indexing. Volume IV of the series presents the unabridged text of Protection or Free Trade (1886), which was read into the U.S. Congressional Record in 1892. George's defense of free trade in this work is considered one of the most articulate and comprehensive in the nineteenth century. He argued that free trade, when combined with land value taxation or the systematic collection of economic rent, reduces wealth and income inequality. True free trade elevates the condition of labor to a greater degree than any form of trade protectionism.
