The people of Manipur, a northeastern state in India, are believed to be descendants of celestial gandharvas, who are blessed with dance and music as a divine gift. The intricately symbolic Hindu dances of Manipur were virtually unseen and unknown outside India until an Australian impresario, Louise Lightfoot, brought them to the stage in the 1950s. Through a pioneering collaboration with dancers Rajkumar Priyagopal Singh and Ibetombi Devi, Lightfoot modernized Manipuri dance for presentation on a global stage. This partnership transformed Manipuri Hindu dances from ritualistic temple practices to a formalized stage art abroad.
Amit Sarwal, in his book, chronicles how this movement, similar to other prominent Indian classical dances and dancers, enabled Manipuri dance and dancers to gain recognition worldwide.
The Celestial Dancers offers a rich and insightful exploration of Hindu temple dance, Manipur dance, cross-cultural collaborations, and the globalization of Indian Classical Dance. It is an invaluable resource for anyone with an interest in these subjects.
