From the author of Death in the New Republic comes another thrilling crime story featuring hard-bitten Johannesburg detective,Jerome Nossel. A distress call from Nossel's old friend, Alex, breaks into the detective's lazy Sunday afternoon. He is propelled into the glamour and sleaze of the city's underworld by a kidnap and a demand for an exotic ransom. Accompanied by Alex's captivating Nigerian wife, Ngozi, they scour the fleshpots of Johannesburg, from its mega-rich northern suburbs to its sordid core in the dark city. They are pursued by the crazed steroidal enforcer who answers to only one man – Yuri Kramerov, the pimpmeister of Doornfontein. With time running out, and in their desperate quest to recover the ransom, encounters, characters, and places create a Chandler-esque story, with Johannesburg as the main attraction.

The Maori approached Alex, who Nossel feared might fall backwards into the freezing black pool, as patently terrified as he was. Nossel's heart was pounding in his chest as he watched Alex struggle to keep his balance on the slippery rock. He knew that he had to act fast if he wanted to save his friend.

Without thinking, Nossel lunged forward and grabbed Alex's arm. He pulled him back towards the shore, where they could safely climb up onto the rocks. As they made their way up, Nossel could feel the weight of Alex's body pressing against him, but he didn't let go. He knew that he had to keep his friend safe until help arrived.

Finally, they reached the top of the rocks and looked out at the black pool below. Nossel could see Alex's face, pale and scared, and he knew that he had to do everything in his power to keep him alive. He called for help, and soon enough, rescue workers arrived on the scene.

Nossel watched as they pulled Alex out of the water and onto a stretcher. He felt a sense of relief wash over him, knowing that his friend was going to be okay. As he walked away from the scene, Nossel couldn't help but think about the dangers of the wilderness. He knew that he had to be more careful in the future, and he couldn't let his fear hold him back from doing what was right.

The next day, Nossel returned to his job as a detective, but he couldn't shake the feeling of guilt that lingered over him. He knew that he had been lucky to save Alex's life, and he felt a responsibility to use his skills to help others in need. He started to investigate the kidnap case, determined to find the people responsible and bring them to justice.

As he dug deeper into the case, Nossel discovered that it was connected to a larger criminal organization that was operating in Johannesburg. He worked tirelessly to gather evidence and build a case against the organization, but he soon realized that he was up against some powerful and dangerous people.

Despite the obstacles that he faced, Nossel refused to give up. He knew that he had to do everything in his power to bring the criminals to justice and protect the people of Johannesburg from harm. And in the end, his hard work paid off. The criminal organization was brought to justice, and the people of Johannesburg could sleep safely at night knowing that their streets were safe.

Nossel's experience in the wilderness had taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of courage and determination. He knew that he could face any challenge that came his way if he had the strength to overcome his fears and never give up. And as he looked out at the city of Johannesburg, he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that he had played a part in making it a safer and better place.
