Will is knocked from his bicycle by a hit-and-run driver and is diagnosed with concussion. He spends the following week in fitful sleep and returns to his practice with a form of Will that held the appointments with his regular clients. Will's one new client is Guy, who claims to be regularly disturbed in his flat by his sister, who has been dead for five years. A young woman in a gondola smiles at Will and takes his picture, and later appears at his studio, having made an appointment. Emma, Guys sister, wants Will to be her therapist, but Will refuses. Chance encounters with her become more frequent and bizarre, taking a toll on Wills marriage, livelihood, and sense of self. Emma knows a lot more about Will than she should.

Will's life was forever altered when he was struck from his bicycle by a hit-and-run driver on his way home from the London clinic where he worked as a psychotherapist. Lara rushed him to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a concussion. Will spent the following week in restless sleep, while Lara went to work. When Will returned to his practice, something was amiss. It appeared that Will, or a version of Will, had kept his regular clients' appointments while he was home asleep. This Will delivered some startling therapy that was completely at odds with his usual behavior, and he found himself bringing up events in their past of which they were unaware. The sessions went horribly. Will's only new client was Guy, who claimed to be regularly disturbed in his flat by his sister, who had been dead for five years. Will strolled past the London Eye on his way home. A young woman in a gondola smiled at him and snapped his photo. She was wearing a red sweater and white jeans. When Will took Lara to a restaurant, the same woman sat at the next table and, to Lara's dismay, smiled at Will. Later, she showed up at his studio, having made an appointment. She introduced herself as Emma, Guys sister, and said she was dead. She wanted Will to be her therapist. Will refused, telling her to see her doctor. Emma, however, had other ideas. Her chance encounters with Will became more frequent and strange. Furthermore, as they began to take a toll on Will's marriage, his career, and even his sense of self, it appeared that Emma knew far more about Will than she should.
