Siberia, to me, feels like a land straight out of a fairy tale. In 1877, when the world's maps were still largely blank, Fritz Dörries embarked on his first journey to Eastern Siberia. Accompanied by his brothers or alone, he undertook daring expeditions, climbing majestic mountains, traversing vast rivers, exploring remote islands, and braving treacherous lakes covered in ice. His sole mission was to expand human knowledge of the natural world.

Dörries encountered an array of formidable challenges along the way. He faced bears, tigers, vipers, bandits, turbulent seas, frostbite, and even treacherous ice chasms that seemed to go on forever. Yet, he fearlessly confronted every danger head-on and overcame it. What's more, he remained utterly defenseless against the captivating beauty of the landscape and the diverse array of animals, birds, and butterflies he encountered.

Over his twenty-two years in Siberia, Dörries amassed an invaluable collection of essential materials for scientific institutions. His contributions, meticulously documented and written for his daughters in his ninetieth year, and later adapted for publication by Roy Jacobsen and Anneliese Pitz, constitute his second great legacy. This captivating account of his adventures, translated from the Norwegian by Seán Kinsella, allows us to glimpse into the awe-inspiring world of Fritz Dörries and his remarkable journey through the enchanting land of Siberia.
