The Passenger

The Passenger is a dark novel by Cormac McCarthy, set in 1980s Mississippi and Florida. It follows Bobby Western, who discovers a sunken jet with nine bodies and a missing tenth passenger. He is haunted by his father's invention of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima and his sister's love and ruin. The book is part of a duology, with the sequel being Stella Maris. McCarthy's prose is praised for its religious impulse, terrifying and absolute quality, and hallucinatory and evangelical power.
