  • More about The Pinch Technique and its Applications to Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

The pinch technique is a systematic framework for constructing Green's functions in non-Abelian gauge theories, which have many useful applications. It is equivalent to calculations in the background field Feynman gauge and is used to derive the Schwinger-Dyson equations. This book is ideal for elementary particle theorists and graduate students.

Non-Abelian gauge theories, such as quantum chromodynamics (QCD) or electroweak theory, require the use of Green's functions that are gauge-invariant off-shell. Unlike the photon in quantum electrodynamics, conventional graphical constructions fail to adequately describe these theories. However, the pinch technique offers a systematic approach to constructing such Green's functions, with numerous practical applications. This book begins with elementary one-loop examples and gradually extends the method to all orders, demonstrating that the pinch technique is equivalent to calculations in the background field Feynman gauge. Within the pinch technique framework, the Schwinger-Dyson equations are derived, showcasing how a dynamical gluon mass arises in QCD. Finally, the volume explores the wide range of applications of the pinch technique. This book is particularly valuable for elementary particle theorists and graduate students. Originally published in 2011, this title has been reissued as an Open Access publication on Cambridge Core.
