At this point, the line intersects with the preserved Strathspey Railway, which utilizes a portion of the original route that was constructed in 1863.

In 1898, a new route was introduced from Aviemore to Inverness, involving a significant climb to a summit at Slochd and a series of impressive viaducts spanning the river valleys. The author has had the privilege of visiting this line on a regular basis over the past four decades, and he has compiled a selection of his steam and diesel photographs that showcase the various traction methods employed during this period.
