The Rural Hinterland of Antipatris, spanning from the Hellenistic to Byzantine periods, presents the remarkable findings of extensive excavations conducted in the rural region south and east of the modern city of Rosh HaAyin. This comprehensive study encompasses a vast span of over 1000 years, delving into the archaeological and historical data of the area.

To explore the settlement pattern of this region, a total of 22 sites were carefully selected, categorized into five primary models that represent a hierarchical settlement structure: farmsteads, subsidiary villages, fortresses, monasteries and churches, and towns. These five settlement types were examined throughout the different periods under study, providing valuable insights into the evolution of the region.

A central focus of this research lies in landscape archaeology, encompassing various aspects such as rural roads, field towers, plot boundaries, oil presses, winepresses, and terraces. These elements serve as crucial indicators of agricultural systems and the potential cultivation areas of diverse agricultural products.

During the Hellenistic period, a significant number of 12 sites dating back to this era were discovered. Most of these sites were farmsteads established during the Iron Age II and continued to function until the 3rd Century BCE. Interestingly, these farmsteads were abandoned in an organized manner, possibly during the transition between Ptolemaic and Seleucid rule. This abandonment indicates a shift in the political and social dynamics of the region.

However, during the Roman Period, a notable decline in settlement distribution is observed. Only five sites are known, and among them, only one large village, Migdal-Afek, stands out. This decline can be attributed to various factors, including economic changes, political instability, or natural disasters.

In contrast, the Byzantine period witnesses a significant rise in settlement numbers. Twenty more settlements from this era were discovered, indicating a substantial increase from the Roman period. These settlements include large villages, manor houses, and monasteries that thrived from the 5th to 8th centuries. These monasteries played a crucial role in the religious and cultural life of the region, contributing to the preservation of knowledge and traditions.

The Rural Hinterland of Antipatris offers a wealth of information about the settlement patterns, agricultural systems, and cultural developments of this region throughout its historical span. Through meticulous excavations and comprehensive analysis, this research sheds light on the rich history and heritage of the area, providing valuable insights into the complex tapestry of ancient civilizations.
