- More about The Second Murderer: Journey through the shadowy underbelly of 1940s LA in this new murder mystery
Denise Mina is a unique storyteller who continues the tales of Philip Marlowe, a private detective in Los Angeles. Marlowe is called to the Montgomery estate to find Chrissie Montgomery, a wealthy twenty-two-year-old who is missing and ripe for someone to get their claws into. The search takes them to the roughest neighborhoods of LA, and before he finds the body at The Brody Hotel, he must decide who will get to her first. Readers love the book for its brave step into the shoes of Raymond Chandler and its capture of the essence of Marlowe, with his duelling dialogue and descriptions of the heat-soaked LA landscape.

I also enjoyed the way the author brought in other characters from the Marlowe universe such as Harry Jones and Moose Malloy. It was nice to see how they interacted with Marlowe and how their past experiences had shaped them.
Overall, I think this is a great addition to the Marlowe series and I would recommend it to fans of Raymond Chandler and detective fiction in general.
I must congratulate Denise Mina for bravely stepping into the shoes of Raymond Chandler and continuing the tales of the much loved Philip Marlowe.
I think the author has done a great job capturing the essence of Marlowe, such as his duelling dialogue with other characters or his descriptions of the heat soaked LA landscape in midsummer. The Chandler sarcastic humour is also present.
