- More about The Smile Gap: A History of Oral Health and Social Inequality
The Smile Gap examines the improvements in oral health and beauty in Canada over the past century, but many Canadians still lack access to good oral health care, especially disabled Canadians, those on social assistance, the working poor, the elderly, and new immigrants. An attractive smile has become increasingly important in the workplace and in relationships, and people with damaged and missing teeth are at a disadvantage. It is time to close the gap in our health care system.

Fifty years ago, the prevailing expectation was that individuals would inevitably lose their teeth as they aged. Few children benefited from orthodontic treatments to straighten their smiles, and cosmetic procedures to enhance the appearance of smiles were largely unheard of. However, today, a significant number of Canadians enjoy straight, white teeth, and an increasing number are choosing to retain their teeth throughout their lives. These advancements have undoubtedly made a positive impact on the oral health and aesthetics of the Canadian population.
The Smile Gap delves into the remarkable transformations that have occurred over the past century. The integration of fluorides, the promotion of regular toothbrushing, the emergence of cosmetic dentistry, and improved access to dental care have all played pivotal roles in enhancing the oral health and beauty of Canadians. While the introduction of employer-provided dental insurance in the 1970s has provided many individuals with the opportunity for regular dental visits, a significant portion of Canadians still face barriers to receiving adequate oral health care, particularly those with disabilities, those on social assistance, the working poor, the elderly, and new immigrants.
Furthermore, an attractive smile has become increasingly significant in both professional and personal contexts. Individuals with damaged or missing teeth face substantial disadvantages, not only due to the pain and discomfort associated with poor oral health but also because our society values good teeth and warm smiles. The first history of oral health in Canada, The Smile Gap, highlights that despite the progress made, too many Canadians go without any dental care, leading to detrimental consequences for their oral health, overall physical well-being, and self-esteem.
To fully realize the vision of a comprehensive healthcare system, it is imperative to address the gap and ensure that all Canadians have access to quality dental care. Closing this gap will not only improve the oral health of individuals but also contribute to their overall health and well-being, enabling them to live fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society.
