The Wild Goose was a remarkable hand-made magazine of verse, crafted and curated by John Boyle OReilly aboard the Hougoumont, the final vessel to transport British convicts to Australia. OReilly, an Irish Fenian with a life sentence for his daring infiltration of the British army and attempted mutiny, managed to escape from Australia aboard a whaling ship and found solace in Boston. There, he ascended to the position of editor at The Pilot, a renowned poet, and abolitionist.

These poems, in essence, can be viewed as a miniature magazine conceived and penned during Gallagher's time as a poet-in-residence at the Heinrich Boll Cottage on Achill Island, County Mayo, Ireland, in 2018 and 2019. Beyond a sequence dedicated to OReilly, these poems delve into the Irish landscape, exploring the rich history and myth that shaped the identities of some of Gallagher's ancestors until British colonialism and the accompanying famine led them to Massachusetts.

The Wild Goose, with its intricate craftsmanship and profound poetic insights, stands as a testament to the enduring power of words and the indomitable spirit of those who have weathered the storms of history.
