The Wisdom of the Desert and the City

James Ashdown reimagines the wisdom of the Desert Fathers and Mothers within a contemporary urban context, exploring how ancient ascetic insights might speak to modern life. By adapting the original sayings, he brings the Syrian Desert to the desert of urban life. The Desert sayings can seem irrelevant and obscure, but translated to modern London they gain an immediacy that illuminates their wisdom in a unique way. ?The selection of original sayings from Columba Stewart’s World of the Desert Fathers, a mainstay of the Desert spirituality literature, leap into sharp focus through the lens of Ashdown’s city desert. Together these authors reveal how the desert tradition can still speak with freshness and authority and how much these ancient writers and monastics have to offer modern society. Challenging, and often unexpectedly humorous, these sayings illuminate the search for silence, humility, compassion, and freedom in God amid the pressures of contemporary life.
