This remarkable edition presents a comprehensive collection of all known surviving writings by the esteemed poet Phillis Wheatley Peters (1753-1784). Since the last attempt at a complete edition was published in 2001, several new discoveries have been made, enriching our understanding of her literary legacy. Among the fifty-seven poems and their authoritative variants, forty-six were published during her lifetime, showcasing her remarkable talent and artistic prowess. Notably, versions of nine of these poems were published before September 1773, marking an early stage in her poetic journey.
Wheatley Peters' literary contributions were further showcased in her publication of Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral in 1773. This collection included thirty-eight works that covered a wide range of subjects, reflecting her intellectual curiosity and poetic versatility. However, it is noteworthy that only seven of her poems were published between 1773 and her untimely death in 1784. Eleven of her poems exist solely in manuscript versions, preserving their unique essence and providing a glimpse into the creative process of this remarkable poet.
In addition to her poetic works, this edition also includes all of Wheatley Peters' extant prose writings. These include twenty-three letters and four subscription proposals, providing valuable insights into her personal and professional life. Furthermore, it includes the three known surviving letters written to Wheatley Peters, shedding light on her relationships and correspondence during her time.
To accompany the writings, an Introduction to her life and times offers a comprehensive overview of her historical context and societal influences. Extensive textual and explanatory notes accompany each piece, enriching the reader's understanding and appreciation of Phillis Wheatley Peters' remarkable literary achievements.
This edition stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Phillis Wheatley Peters, a poet who transcended racial barriers and left an indelible mark on the world of literature. It is a valuable resource for scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of her artistic expression and the profound impact she had on her contemporaries and future generations.
