A.E. Stallings is a modern poet who was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and lives in Athens, Greece. Her poems come out of life's dailiness, as a wife, mother, teacher, expatriate, and translator of ancient and modern Greek. She was among volunteers helping refugees as they arrived in Greece, and their experience haunted her to write, My love, I'm grateful tonight / Our listing bed isn't a raft / Precariously adrift / As we dodge the coast guard light.

Format: Paperback / softback

The speaker, a poet living in Athens, Greece, is influenced by ancient traditions of strict forms and meters, which she uses to challenge modern and American poetry. She was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and her poems come out of life's dailiness, as a wife, mother, teacher, expatriate, and translator of ancient and modern Greek. She also translates Latin, her most notable large work being the Penguin Lucretius. Being a poet in Greece entails being part of that world, and the speaker was among volunteers helping refugees as they arrived in Greece, which haunted her to write "My love, I'm grateful tonight / Our listing bed isn't a raft / Precariously adrift / As we dodge the coast guard light." The speaker's poems are intimate and address her love, children, or friends without self-indulgence or confession.
