Navied Madhavian, a New Yorker cartoonist, has written a captivating debut graphic memoir that delves into themes of belonging, identity, and creating a home in the remote American West. Before his move to an off-grid cabin in rural Idaho in November 2016, Mahdavian had never fished, gardened, hiked, hunted, or lived in a snowy place. However, he saw this as an opportunity to own land and start a family, a millennial dream.

Over the next three years, Mahdavian embraced the wonders of the natural landscape and gradually adjusted to a slower pace of life. But beyond the boundaries of his six acres, he faced the realities of America's political shifts and had to confront the question: "Do I belong here?"

Mahdavian's graphic memoir is beautifully self-illustrated and often hilariously written. It charts his growth as an artist, citizen, and new father while celebrating his love for the place and honoring the relationships he formed in rural America. At the same time, it articulates the difficult moments of racism and brutality he encountered as a Middle Eastern American.

Through his insider perspective, Mahdavian offers a unique portrayal of a region that many people know little about. With wit and compassion, he provides a thoughtful and insightful exploration of the complexities of identity, culture, and environment in the American West.
