- More about Thomas Aquinas and the Greek Fathers
Thomas Aquinas' integration of Aristotle's philosophical corpus and the Greek patristic sources into a thirteenth-century theological framework shaped his exposition of sacra doctrina. To address this gap, the Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal and the Thomistic Institute co-sponsored an international gathering of scholars, resulting in a rich volume of essays that highlight Aquinas' unique standing and provide avenues for further study.

Scholars have frequently acknowledged Thomas Aquinas' unique ability to reclaim Aristotle's Greek philosophical heritage. However, a proper appreciation of both his originality and indebtedness in appropriating the profound theological insights of the Greek Fathers of the Church has often lagged. Similar to his integration of the Aristotelian philosophical corpus, Aquinas skillfully interwove the often newly received and translated Greek patristic sources into a thirteenth-century theological framework, dominated by the Latin Fathers. His utilization of the Greek Fathers played a definitive role in shaping his exposition of sacred doctrine in fundamental areas such as God and creation, Trinitarian theology, moral life, and Christ and the Sacraments.
To address this gap and spark scholarly interest in Aquinas' relationship with the Fathers of the Christian East, the Aquinas Center for Theological Renewal at Ave Maria University and the Thomistic Institute of the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception at the Dominican House of Studies co-sponsored an international gathering of scholars titled "Thomas Aquinas and the Greek Fathers." Sensitive to the commonalities and differences between Aquinas and the Greek Fathers, the essays in this volume have emerged from the theme of this conference and offer a rich harvest of some of the conference's outcomes. At last, scholars have a comprehensive volume of diverse, penetrating essays that both highlight Aquinas' distinct position among the Latin scholastics in relation to the Greek Fathers and provide valuable avenues for further study.
