  • More about Too Young, Too Loud, Too Different: Poems from Malika's Poetry Kitchen

Malika Booker and Roger Robinson founded Malika's Poetry Kitchen in the early 2000s to provide a space for writers outside of the establishment to grow, improve, discuss, and learn. The collective has since launched a new generation of voices and branches in Chicago and India, and "Too Young, Too Loud, Too Different" is a celebration of its legacy and a rallying cry for all writers to dream the future.

In the early years of the new millennium, poets Malika Booker and Roger Robinson recognized the absence of a platform for writers outside the mainstream to thrive, develop, exchange ideas, and learn. Driven by this need, Malika offered her Brixton kitchen table as a gathering place for like-minded individuals. Thus, Malika's Poetry Kitchen was born.

Renamed "Kitchen," this space has become a hub for a new generation of voices, giving rise to some of the most exciting writers, books, and initiatives in British poetry over the past two decades. Today, Kitchen is a thriving writers' collective with branches in Chicago and India, showcasing the diverse talents of its members.

Too Young, Too Loud, Too Different is a tribute to Kitchen's legacy, a celebration of its founding spirit, and a call to action for all writers to dream and shape the future of literature. This collection showcases breathtaking new poems by Warsan Shire, Inua Ellams, Kayo Chingonyi, Dean Atta, Roger Robinson, and Malika Booker, among many others.

Through their collective efforts, Malika Booker and Roger Robinson have created a space where marginalized voices can be heard, celebrated, and empowered. Kitchen has played a pivotal role in shaping the literary landscape, providing a platform for underrepresented writers to share their stories and contribute to the rich tapestry of British poetry.
