The impact of pandemics, global climate chaos, and widespread migration crises on individuals and communities is profound and distressing. These phenomena evoke traumatic experiences in unprecedented numbers and ways, challenging our understanding of trauma and its aftermath. This book is designed to appeal to clinicians, scientists, cultural theorists, and scholars and students of trauma studies who are eager to cultivate interdisciplinary insights into trauma and posttraumatic conditions, particularly resistance, resilience, and posttraumatic growth.
In response to clinicians' invitation for trauma survivors to adopt a philosopher's hat, engage in creative activities, and utilize cognitive exercises to combat psychic constriction, I introduce the concept of a Literary Arts Praxis. This Praxis is grounded in clinical research and literature infused with existential, phenomenological, and aesthetic themes.
I argue that an educational training in a Praxis can be transformative for trauma survivors, enabling them to access and process their trauma through imaginative escapades, while forging alliances with characters. Interpretive exercises, such as triggering emotions through phenomenological experiences, and creative writing endeavors, including transforming testimonies into imaginative stories, can play a significant role in this process.
By integrating literary arts practices into trauma therapy, we can offer a holistic and innovative approach to healing and recovery. This book aims to provide a roadmap for clinicians, researchers, and practitioners to explore the potential of the Literary Arts Praxis in addressing the complex challenges posed by trauma and promoting resilience and posttraumatic growth.
