  • More about Tugs and Towing Around Britain

Tugs were developed in the 19th century to assist ships in docking and navigating, with the Charlotte Dundas being the first tugboat powered by a Watt engine. Early tugs had paddle wheels, which were later replaced by propeller-driven vessels. Ian Collard's book features photographs and informative captions of tugs employed around the British Isles.

The first tugs were built in the early 19th century in response to the development of enclosed docks and the growth in size and power of sea-going vessels. These tugs were essential for assisting ships to their berths and navigating larger vessels through narrow waterways and tight docking areas. Tugs are highly maneuverable and powerful vessels that can tow or push ships. The first tugboat, the Charlotte Dundas, was powered by a Watt engine and was employed in Scotland in 1802 to tow barges on the Forth and Clyde Canal. The early tugs were fitted with paddle wheels, which were later replaced by propeller-driven vessels. Ian Collard explores a variety of tugs employed around the British Isles, assisting a wide range of ships in major ports and smaller ones. The book includes previously unpublished photographs from the author's collection, accompanied by informative captions.
