Since the publication of the previous series on liver tumors nearly two decades ago, there have been significant advancements in our understanding of the pathology and molecular characteristics of these tumors. Numerous breakthroughs have been made in this field, including the identification of novel entities, such as their precursor lesions, the discovery of critical molecular changes, such as the fusion transcript between the DNAJB1 gene and the PRKACA gene in fibrolamellar carcinoma, the utilization of glutamine synthetase in the diagnosis of focal nodular hyperplasia, and the subtyping of hepatocellular adenomas using molecular and immunohistochemical methods. In addition to the more unified classification and terminology of intrahepatic bile duct tumors and their precursors, these advances necessitate the presentation of updated information in this volume.

The identification of novel entities, including their precursor lesions, has been a significant breakthrough in our understanding of liver tumors. This has led to the discovery of key molecular changes, such as the fusion transcript between the DNAJB1 gene and the PRKACA gene in fibrolamellar carcinoma. This fusion transcript is believed to play a crucial role in the development and progression of fibrolamellar carcinoma, and its identification has opened up new avenues for targeted therapy and diagnosis.

Another important advance in the field of liver tumor pathology and molecular features has been the use of glutamine synthetase in the diagnosis of focal nodular hyperplasia. Focal nodular hyperplasia is a rare liver tumor that can be difficult to diagnose due to its subtle appearance on imaging studies. However, glutamine synthetase can be detected in the tumor tissue, making it a valuable biomarker for diagnosing this condition.

The subtyping of hepatocellular adenomas using molecular and immunohistochemical methods has also been a significant development. Hepatocellular adenomas are the most common type of liver tumor, and there are several subtypes that have been identified based on their genetic and molecular characteristics. These subtypes can help guide treatment decisions and predict the course of the tumor.

In addition to these advances, there have been more unified classification and terminology of intrahepatic bile duct tumors and their precursors. This has helped to improve communication between healthcare professionals and improve the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment.

Overall, the recent advancements in our understanding of liver tumor pathology and molecular features have been significant and have paved the way for new treatments and improved outcomes for patients with these diseases. These advances will continue to shape the future of liver tumor research and treatment.
