  • More about Unified Computational Fluid Dynamics Framework from Rarefied to Continuum Regimes

This Element provides a unified computational fluid dynamics framework that models flow physics in a discretized space, using the variation-of-cell Knudsen number to obtain continuous modelling equations in different regimes. It includes the discrete velocity method (DVM)–based unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS), particle-based unified gas-kinetic particle method (UGKP), and wave and particle–based unified gas-kinetic wave-particle method (UGKWP).

This Element presents a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics framework that spans from rarefied to continuum regimes. The foundation of this framework lies in the direct modelling of flow physics within a discretized space. The choice of mesh size and time step serves as the modelling scales for constructing discretized governing equations. By varying the cell Knudsen number, continuous modelling equations can be obtained across different regimes, resulting in the Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes equations as two limiting equations in the kinetic and hydrodynamic scales.

The unified algorithms encompassed within this framework include the discrete velocity method (DVM)-based unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS), the particle-based unified gas-kinetic particle method (UGKP), and the wave and particle-based unified gas-kinetic wave-particle method (UGKWP). The UGKWP stands out as a multi-scale approach, employing particles for non-equilibrium transport and waves for equilibrium evolution. Furthermore, the particle dynamics in the rarefied regime and the hydrodynamic flow solver in the continuum regime have been unified by considering the cell Knudsen number.

This comprehensive framework offers a powerful tool for studying a wide range of fluid dynamics phenomena, from rarefied gases to complex flows in continuum environments. By leveraging the direct modelling approach and employing unified algorithms, researchers can gain insights into the behaviour of fluids at different scales and explore a wide array of applications in fields such as aerodynamics, combustion, and transport processes.
