Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a towering figure among the Post-Impressionist painters. While much of his artistic output, such as the renowned Irises study, exudes a vibrant and luminous quality, it is important to note that van Gogh's personal life was marked by profound turmoil. In a tragic turn of events, he experienced a severe mental health crisis that led to him infamously severing his own ear. Driven by the need for help, van Gogh admitted himself to the Saint-Paul Asylum at Saint-Rémy in the south of France. It was during his time in the asylum that his recovery began, and it was through the art of painting that he found solace and healing. Among the remarkable works that emerged from his artistic journey was the iconic Irises painting. We are truly honored to have this seminal piece from the J. Paul Getty Museum in our collection, serving as a testament to van Gogh's enduring legacy and the power of art to transcend personal struggles.
