Virga: A Poem by Togara Muzanenhamo

Winner of the African Poetry Book Fund's 2022 Luschei Prize for African Poetry, A Poetry Book Society Autumn 2021 Recommendation, and An Irish Times Best Poetry Books of 2021, Virga is the third book of poems by Zimbabwean poet Togara Muzanenhamo. Set in the twentieth century, Virga weaves historical events together with the influence of weather, capturing stories of a rapidly evolving century beneath an ancient and fragile sky. The title of the book refers to the meteorological phenomenon in which a column, shaft, or band of rain or snow is seen falling from a cloud but never reaching the earth, evaporating before touchdown. Like his previous collection, Gumiguru, which delved deeply into the themes of weather, Virga continues to explore the impact of weather on our daily lives. However, in Virga, Togara Muzanenhamo broadens his geographical scope to encompass wider worlds and different histories, skillfully interwoven by the poet's fascination with the elements. Togara Muzanenhamo has been shortlisted for prestigious awards such as the Jerwood Alderburgh First Collection Prize and the Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry, showcasing his talent and recognition in the world of poetry.
