Walking Through Clear Water in a Pool Painted Black is the sole story collection from the renowned writer, actress, ex-biker, and columnist Cookie Mueller, published in the UK for the first time. Mueller vividly chronicles her adventurous, high-risk, high-reward life in vibrant technicolor, encompassing her journey from joining John Waters renowned acting troupe to becoming a mother, her vivid descriptions of the hedonism of 1980s New York, and her critical assessment of the government's inadequate response to the AIDS epidemic. With a fresh, wise, freewheeling, and unafraid of darkness, Cookie's voice is akin to a lysergic Nora Ephron, offering a candid contrast to the idealistic hippie dream. Her stories, whether good, bad, or ugly, are fiercely entertaining and consistently honest.
Featuring a new introduction by Olivia Laing, this edition collects Mueller's stories, columns, and writings, showcasing a testament to a life lived courageously and well.
