  • More about Whitland to Pembroke Dock

The West Wales Railways series continues with Whitland to Pembroke Dock, covering the section from Whitland to Pembroke Dock, a largely agricultural and holiday line. The line was worked by Whitland depot, which was a steam sub-shed of Neyland, with its own allocation of tank engines. Freight traffic was significantly affected by the withdrawal of goods sundries and parcels traffic in 1976, but now the traffic is purely passenger with DMUs. The previous Pembroke Coast Express was the prime train on the branch, and is still reproduced in modern preserved steam special workings.

The West Wales Railways series continues with the latest book, Whitland to Pembroke Dock, covering the line from the Severn Tunnel to the ends of the main line in West Wales. This volume focuses on the section from Whitland to Pembroke Dock, a largely agricultural and holiday line centered on Tenby and Pembroke. The line was operated by Whitland Depot, a steam sub-shed of Neyland, with its own allocation, primarily of tank engines. These engines worked the Cardigan and Pembroke Dock branches until the former was closed under the Beeching closures in the mid-1960s, when the engine shed was closed in 1964 due to dieselization. The withdrawal of goods, sundries, and parcels traffic, as well as wagon load freight traffic in 1976, significantly impacted the volume of freight traffic on the line. Similar to much of South Wales, the traffic on the branch is now solely passenger, with DMUs operating. However, on summer Saturdays, a through train with IETs to and from Paddington still operates, continuing the service from HSTs. The previous Pembroke Coast Express, in its steam and early diesel days, was the primary train on the branch running to and from Paddington, and it is still replicated in modern preserved steam special workings.
