In his latest series of works, titled 1.000 Odysseen, Winfried Muthesius (b. 1957) employs his photographs to delve into the deeply contentious issues of refugeeism and displacement. The artist, who divides his time between Berlin and Cape Verde, captured images of washed-up items on the secluded beaches of the Cape Verde islands. These hauntingly poetic photographs predominantly feature details of damaged or destroyed flip-flops, the humble footwear worn by individuals living in poverty.

In the exhibition held at the Stiftung Christliche Kunst Wittenberg, Muthesius engages in a dialogue with Oskar Kokoschkas renowned piece Rest on the Flight into Egypt, utilizing this example to evoke humanity's enduring history of flight and exile. This book showcases numerous images from the series, alongside hitherto unpublished drawings by the artist, images from his broken gold series, and texts by Pia Beckmann, Christhard-Georg Neubert, and an interview with Winfried Muthesius. The text is available in both English and German.
