This comprehensive edition presents all of the known surviving writings of the renowned poet Phillis Wheatley (1753-1784), several of which have been discovered since the last attempt at a complete edition was published in 2001. Spanning fifty-seven poems and their authoritative variants, forty-six of these were published during her lifetime. Notably, versions of nine of these poems were published prior to September 1773. In 1773, Wheatley published a collection titled Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral in London. Among her poetic works, only seven were published between 1773 and her passing in 1784. Eleven of her poems exist solely in manuscript versions. Additionally, this edition encompasses all of Wheatley's extant prose writings, consisting of twenty-three letters and four subscription proposals. It also includes the three known surviving letters written to her. Accompanying Wheatley's writings is an Introduction to her life and times, along with extensive textual and explanatory notes, enriching the reader's understanding and appreciation of her remarkable literary legacy.
